Biography: Born on March 31, 1948, Al Gore is the son of former U.S. Senator Albert Gore, Sr. and Pauline LaFon Gore. After growing up in Carthage, Tennessee and in Washington, D.C., Gore graduated from Harvard University in 1969 with a degree in government. He married Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Aitcheson in 1970, but soon thereafter enlisted in the Army, and served as a reporter in Vietnam. When he returned to Tennessee, he attended Divinity School and worked as a newspaper reporter. In 1973, he and Tipper bought their farmhouse in Carthage, where they have lived ever since. Gore began his political career in 1976, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee. He served four terms until he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984. President Clinton chose Gore as his running mate in 1992 and 1996, and he has been vice-president since 1993.
