After growing up in Carthage, Tennessee and in Washington, D.C., Gore graduated from Harvard University in 1969 with a degree in government. He married Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Aitcheson in 1970, but soon thereafter enlisted in the Army, and served as a reporter in Vietnam. When he returned to Tennessee, he attended Divinity School and worked as a newspaper reporter. In 1973, he and Tipper bought their farmhouse in Carthage, where they have lived ever since.
